Jasmine in Her Hair
Many of you are familiar with Huma Siddiqui and the wonderful cooking classes she has presented numerous times here at the Co-op. We are pleased to offer her new book, Jasmine In Her Hair, as this month’s book feature. As well as many delicious recipes, Siddiqui shares with us an unusually personal account of the culture—and food—of Pakistan, her homeland. The book is filled with accounts of Pakistani daily life and celebrations and of course recipes to accompany each event. The abundance of colorful photos is the perfect icing on the cake. Most of Siddiqui’s recipes can be quickly prepared on top of the stove, making this cuisine with its rich layers of flavors perfect for summer cooking, though you may choose to follow your meal with something cold and frosty like a mango lassi rather than a warm masala chai tea. Whatever your choice, Jasmine In Her Hair will satisfy your cravings until the next Pakistani cooking class! Enjoy!

Sinfully Vegan
A recent addition to our book collection is Sinfully Vegan by Lois Dieterly who honed her skills baking vegan goodies for a Pennsylvania restaurant. As well as being vegan, some of the recipes are also wheat-free. There are recipes for summery tropical fruit treats, homey puddings, and pies, cakes and cookies galore—even some cold sweet beverages for hot afternoons on the porch and jelly donuts for a lazy weekend brunch. We all need a little treat now and then and these look to be delicious and less guilt-producing than most.

2004 National Co-op Directory
If you are committed to eating organically or locally—or even just trying to avoid fast food you might think of travel as a challenging experience—it can sometimes be hard to find road food you feel good about eating. Well, we have a handy guide that can help change that. The 2004 National Co-op Directory contains listings of natural food co-ops across the country. Some states have lots, some only a couple but almost every state has at least one co-op. The directory listings include contact information, services offered and many list travel directions and website info. Best of all, the whole thing is slim enough to fit into your glove box or backpack. This could lead you to a whole new type of travel—comparing co-ops across the US—maybe a tour group?? Happy trails!
