The Prozac Alternative

by Amanda Biederman, Housewares/Book Buyer

With the holidays behind us and another few snowy months ahead before spring arrives, some of us are outdoors playing in the snow while many of us are counting the days to more sunshine and warmer weather. Wisconsin is a great place to live, but if the “winter blues” are affecting your life during these sun-shorted days, or if you or someone you know is affected by depression, The Prozac Alternative by Ran Knishinsky is a great book that provides natural relief through the use of herbs, homeopathy, and other alternative therapies.

Natural remedies

For years, doctors have been prescribing Prozac to patients affected with depression and bipolar disorder. Many conventional doctors are unfamiliar with botanical medicines, so Prozac and other antidepressants are prescribed regularly without much thought on the drugs’ side effects. In the 1990s, the sale of Prozac exceeded the sale of all other antidepressant drugs in both the American and world markets, yet people taking Prozac have to take the chance of being affected with symptoms such as nausea, anxiety, and insomnia just to name a few. If you’re looking for a solution to this disorder that is natural and has no known side affects, St. John’s Wort, Kava, Ginko, and 5-HTP are some of the remedies being prescribed by naturopathic medical doctors and herbalists alike. No prescription antidepressant has as many therapeutic uses as St. John’s Wort, and The Prozac Alternative offers a comprehensive look at this herb that has been providing relief to people for thousands of years.

Abnormal dreams, abnormal thinking, agitation, allergic reaction, anxiety, bronchitis, chest pain, chills, cough, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness and fatigue, dry mouth, flu symptoms, frequent urination, hay fever, headache, inability to fall or stay asleep, increased appetite, indigestion, itching, joint pain, lack or loss of appetite, light-headedness, limb pain, muscle pain, nausea, nervousness, sinus inflammation, sore throat, stomach/intestinal disorder, sweating, tremors, weakness, weight loss, and yawning are the symptoms that ‘commonly’ affect patients using doctor-prescribed antidepressants. Many other side effects are known but are not considered as common. With all of this to deal with, it’s no wonder that more and more people are turning to natural alternative therapies to provide themselves with relief. The Prozac Alternative is an excellent resource for people who want to know all the facts and all the alternatives to making the steps toward healthier and happier living.
