Electric charging stations
Q: Regarding the comment in the recent Reader about gas vehicles using spaces with charging stations… Until MGE starts charging EV users for electricity at these charging stations (that all MGE customers pay for in the end) OR MGE picks up gas vehicle power costs AND charging stations or EV “reserved” sites (like the one at Whole Foods) are not front and center, most convenient to entry doors, AND EVs/hybrids are well-beyond the reach of most consumers @ $30k+ I’ll continue to pull into such spaces if they’re available. Just my 2¢ on the classist nature of “reserved” hybrid/EV spots near entryways of stores with very busy parking lots. I’d be more accepting of such parking spots if they were in far corners of parking lots at least until most of us can buy EVs.

A: The locations of the charging stations within thes lot were based on proximity to the MGE power supply and easement. We are simply asking owners of non-charging vehicles (I am one too) to park in other parking spots when available. –Wynston Estis, Operations Manager

Chorizo
Q: PLEASE: get your chorizo sausage back on the shelf. It’s dearly, dearly missed by many. Thank you!

A: We have decided to discontinue all El Rey refrigerated products due to unresolved concerns. We do, however, carry the Willy Street Co-op brand of chorizo. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback on our recipe and it is made from local Willow Creek Farms pork! Thanks! –Gina Jimenez-Lalor, Deli Manager–East

Cranberry availability
Q: I am disgusted that the cranberries are from CA when WI is a cranberry-producing state. Is this because you can’t get them organically?

A: Correct! WI supplies ran short due to an October freeze. We supplemented with organic product from OR, CA, and Canada to fill the gap. –Andy Johnston, Produce Manager–East

Remodel idea
Q: When you remodel, would you put a ramp in the sidewalk that extends north (east) in front of the handicapped stalls that are at the north end outside the front door. That would make it a lot easier to access your northeast rear parking lot by those other businesses.

A: Sorry, the City of Madison Traffic and Engineering will not approve a ramp in this area. That curb is located at the top of our trucking lane to the dock, which would make the ramp there against code. Thanks for the suggestion though. –Wynston Estis, Operations Manager

A few suggestions
Q; Black beans on salad bar. NO Soy vegan breakfast options. Real seasoning on potatoes not TACO seasoning. More no-soy vegan options on salad bar. NO ONIONS in black-eyed pea salad.

A; Thank you for your list of suggestions. We have experimented with a variety of beans on our salad bar, and the garbanzos were the most popular. We are happy to revisit this again. Currently we carry oatmeal, a vegan breakfast sandwich and potatoes. The seasoning on our potatoes consists of chili powder, onion powder, garlic, cumin, tomato powder, oregano and cayenne (taco seasoning). This combination of flavors has been very popular with most Owners. If you have any other suggestions, please send them our way! Thanks! –Gina Jimenez-Lalor, Deli Manager–East

Spicy hot
Q: Vegan gumbo was super hot and I usually don’t mind hot. Could you please post a sign when food is very hot. My mouth is still burning a lot. I had to toss it. Thank you.

A: I apologize for your experience. Generally the vegan gumbo is not too overwhelming. The sign does say spicy but the level can vary. You are welcome to get a refund at Customer Service. Sampling is also highly encouraged. –Gina Jimenez-Lalor, Deli Manager–East

Gluten-free pizza
Q: Please bring back the Glutino small pizzas! These are an essential part of my kid’s gluten-free lunch! Thanks!

A: Thank you for taking the time to write us. We had dropped the Glutino pizzas in favor of bringing in the often-requested Udi’s GF pizzas. Unfortunately we forgot to add these right away when the Glutino sold out. Sorry for that! You should be able to find the Udi’s on the shelf any day of the week now. I hope that these are a suitable replacement for your family. Thanks again for your comment. –Patrick Humiston, Grocery Manager–East

Q: Ian was very helpful and knowledgeable. He is an asset to your company.

A: Thanks for taking the time to write us. I am very glad to hear that you found one of our staff members both helpful and knowledgeable. I hope that any and all future interactions are as pleasant and productive as this one was! –Patrick Humiston, Grocery Manager–East

East’s Bulk aisle reset
Q: Regarding the new set up in the bulk aisle at Willy East—liquid bulk items (such as oils, syrup, etc.) are problematic. The lower shelf is too low to fit an olive oil bottle under the spigot, while the upper levels are too high for me to comfortably reach!! What were you thinking???

A: Thank you very much for taking the time to write us. We are very aware of the shortcoming and limitations of these new liquid bulk fixtures. We are in the process of researching some solutions and options to address these issues. In the interim, please by all means contact either a grocery staff member or Customer Service for assistance. –Patrick Humiston, Grocery Manager–East

Credit card fees
Q: Can you just charge me the fee for credit cards? Whatever fee you have to pay, pass it on to me. Maybe add 1% for handling it. That way: I get to see the fee—makes it real to me—and you don’t have to pay it.

A: We are allowed to offer discounts or other incentives to encourage patrons to use a particular form of payment or type of debit/credit card, but to the best of my understanding we cannot surcharge people for using a particular form of payment. Thank you for the thoughtful request. Best, David Waisman, Director of Finance

Thanks for the tunes
Q: Loved the woodwind ensemble at West! Thank you.

A: I’m so very happy to hear that! I was hoping to do something a little different and a little lively and the Middleton Symphony Orchestra really delivered. We will work on arranging another visit this spring. –Jack Kear, Event Coordinator

Thanks
Q: Kudos to Willy Street staff for their unfailing helpfulness and kindness. Usually have a hard time just being patient in the parking lot.

A: Thanks for your kind comments! Wish I could double the parking for you, but we all know that cannot happen. But I love hearing any and all opinions! –Mike Byrne, Store Manager–West

European-style shopping
Q: Writing to tell Martha and the editor how much I enjoyed the article about European-style shopping. That is what I am doing now and I love it.

A: Thank you so much for the great feedback. We’re really happy to have Martha Claassen contributing to the Reader. –Liz Wermcrantz, Editor
