Q: Please include nutritional information on parsnips.

GRASS-FED BEEF
Q: Is your grass-fed roast beef grain finished? And why has it gone from$8.99/lb. to $12.00/lb. this year?

A; Thanks for writing! Our grass-fed beef is 100% grass-fed. Unfortunately, the cost of all beef has had a significant increase in the last year due to our recent drought. The cost of grain increased, increasing the cost of grain-fed beef, which ultimately affected the supply and demand of the grass-fed beef. Supply and demand led to increased cost for the suppliers thus leading to increased prices to the consumer. Best, Gina Jimenez-Lalor, Deli Manager–East

Q: I stopped in today to shop but with the express purpose to request that you get Jovial’s einkorn pasta – only to see it on the shelves!! Go Willy! Thanks for keeping up with what’s new (or in this case quite old) and good for our bodies.

VEGGIE DOG AND CAT FOOD
Q: I am concerned about Willy Street carrying veggie dog food. Feeding cats/dogs only veggies is detrimental to their health. These animals can only survive for short periods of time without meat.

A: Thank you for your concern. I also have concerns about feeding dogs and especially cats only vegetables. We stock one variety of vegetarian dog food, manufactured by Natural Life. They have created a balanced formula to contain nutrients that adult, non-reproducing dogs need. We do not currently stock any vegetarian cat food. From my understanding, cats are strict (obligate) carnivores whereas dogs are omnivores. We do have demand for a vegetarian dog food, so we continue to stock it. Q: Can we make the type on the scale tags larger? Especially on Willy Pack items.

A: Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, this is not something we can change at this time. Some of our products have long lists of ingredients, which we are obligated to disclose. With our current label type and label template, we need all of the space we can get. Please let us know if you need assistance reading a particular label, or if you would like to request a printout of the ingredients of a particular item. -Matt McHugh, Flow of Goods Manager

SAVE ME SOME SOUP!
Q: I am quite sick and called to see what soup you had and the Deli man told me there was corn chowder. I came for it and it wasn’t here. The other soup had noodles and I’m gluten-free.

Q: You guys are great! I asked about a cookie you made last year (Italian Anise) that didn’t seem available this year and three days later it appeared on your shelves! Wow! Fabulous, even it if it was going to be available without asking. Thank you!

a Hot spicy love affair
Q: What is this love affair with “Hot Spicy” food!! Food can be wonderfully flavorful without being so difficult on the digestion. Make spices available for add ons for those who like and want that extra fire.

We have always carried condiments such as Frank’s Red Hot and Sriracha for those who have asked for a little spice, but after receiving a flood of requests for some spicy dishes to be added to the menu, we decided to give it a try. go vegan!
Q: I just wanted to let you know that the ever-expanding vegan selection, especially in the bakery department, has been noticed and greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work! Also, it would be nice to have the nutrition information displayed with the baked goods.

FINANCE UPDATE
In the February Reader we responded to a Customer Comment saying that we cannot add a surcharge to credit card purchases. A recent settlement changed that. Beginning January 27, 2013, merchants are permitted to apply a surcharge to transactions when customers use a credit card. There are specific rules about how the surcharge can be applied, but cannot exceed the actual fees charged to the merchant or 4%. With that recent change, retailers can choose to pursue business as usual, surcharge credit card users, discount PIN debit, cash, and checks, or some combination thereof. The Co-op will not be making any quick changes as a result of this settlement, but we will evaluate operational challenges and Owner impact of the various options available to us.
