Owner benefits

You'll find competitive prices at the Co-op, along with several programs designed to help you save even more!

Benefits of Ownership

Anyone can shop at the Co-op, and everyone is welcome to join. Your equity payments are an investment in your Co-op and are used as capital, assisting with store operations and improvements.

Becoming a owner of the Co-op gives you an opportunity to join your friends and neighbors in building a community, owned, and democratically controlled economic institution that serves the owners. Co-op owners are helping to build a business that brings integrity into the marketplace, a company that is responsive to and operates with the consumer's interests at heart, while providing the community with good jobs and good food.

As a Willy Street Co-op owner, you can:

  1. Receive a Patronage Refund during years the Co-op is profitable (initiated in late 2009)
  2. Save 10% every day
(owners pay shelf price; non-owners pay 10% more)
  3. Write checks or use your Debit card for up to $20 over your purchase
  4. Get discounts on pre-ordered case purchases
  5. Special order items not regularly sold in the store
  6. Receive our monthly newsletter, the Willy Street Co-op Reader, in the mail
  7. Receive a 5% discount on Reader advertising
  8. Participate in the organization by serving on committees or running for the Board of Directors
  9. Co-op reciprocity: When travelling you'll pay owner prices at most other retail food co-ops throughout the country by showing your Willy Street Co-op owner card.
  • Benefits are limited to Willy Street Co-op owners only; purchase surcharges waived for customers with legitimate ownership cards from other existing food co-ops.

It's Easy to Join!
Becoming a owner of a cooperative means, among other things that you will make an investment in the co-op, essentially becoming one of the 'owners' of the business. At Willy Street Co-op, we call this investment your Fair Share. To join, simply fill out a Fair Share contract and return it to a cashier or mail it, with your payment. Benefits of ownership begin with your first payment!

Payment option 2:
up to 7 payments of at least $10.00 ($8.00 payment toward a full Fair Share + $2.00 administrative fee for each payment), for a maximum investment of $70.

All rights and privileges to vote and receive special offers

A household ownership is two people entitled to one vote, but both people on the ownership avoid the non-owner surcharge, can enter prize drawings, and get tickets to the Annual Ownership Meeting & Party. The primary name on the ownership is the person who can make changes regarding the ownership.

Payment option 1: one-time full payment of $93 ($91.00 purchases a full Fair Share + $2.00 administrative fee*)

Payment option 2:
up to 7 payments of at least $15.00 ($13.00 payment toward a full Fair Share + $2.00 administrative fee for each payment), for a maximum investment of $105.
* Payment in full saves you up to $12 in administrative fees.

Madison HOURS
Madison has its own local currency, Madison HOURS. You can use HOURS to buy groceries at the Co-op. Due to the varying number of HOURS we receive and/or are able to disburse, we need to be able to adjust our policy occasionally. We will do our best to give you as much notice as possible before these changes occur. As of March 1, 1997, you can use one quarter HOUR or one half HOUR as partial payment per purchase totaling $20 or more—TUESDAYS ONLY. You may also exchange Federal dollars for Madison HOURS or request HOURS as change.
