Mineral salt baths are a great way to wind down from a stressful day. They are also excellent gifts for any occasion. I like to make different batches with various scents, using essential oils.
For gifts, I put them in mason jars, wrap them with a ribbon and top them with a bow. I will then usually attach a tag describing the scent—jasmine, patchouli, or whatever else I’ve decided to use. Finally, I sometimes attach the specific recipe so they can then pass it on or even make some more for themselves. Sounds complicated, but it’s really not.
In this article I will give you two recipes. The first one has skim milk in it and will not be appropriate to anyone with dairy aversions. Whether for yourself or someone special, mineral salt baths add new meaning to the usual bath. It is so simple, yet effective to make.
Therapeutic Bath Recipe
1/2 c. dried skim milk
1/3 c. sea salt or Epsom salt
7-10 drops essential oils
Directions: Combine dried skim milk, sea salt or Epsom salt in a large bowl. Sprinkle essential oils over mixture and stir well. Pack it up and you are done.
Note: This recipe is equal to 3 baths, so if you’re making a larger batch, multiply accordingly. Also, when you’re really achy you can use more than a single batch with no problem. I hear it’s good to soak as long as you can, within reason of course, to get the full benefits.
*Please Note: Use dried skim milk only. Whole milk will leave an unpleasant fatty residue on you and the tub.

Eucalyptus Epsom Salt Bath
- 3 c. Epsom salt
- 1/2 c. baking soda
- 6 drops Palmarosa essential oil
- 6 drops lemon grass oil
- 2 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
- 2 drops Rosemary essential oil
Directions: Mix Epsom salt and baking soda in a bowl. Add essential oils. Use of a metal spoon is recommended because it won’t absorb too much of the essential oil. Store for 24 hours to cure. You might ask why you should use aromatherapy essential oil verses the less expensive essential oils. Personally, I use both. Willy Street Co-op’s Health and Beauty section carries both, but the aromatherapy essential oils are more expensive in most cases. The price difference has to do with quality. Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils to assist health and well-being. It is based on a holistic approach, one that includes the body, spirit and mind. Aromatic essential oils are processed, refined and stored using much greater precision. Good, pure essential oils can quickly dissipate and be absorbed by the skin. It is said that there are healthful benefits even just smelling the aroma. It is believed that aromatherapy essential oils can even stimulate the brain, initiating different physiological functions, relief from pain, boosts in mood, and the release of hormones. These essential oils are very potent and must be used in a diluted form. Do not drink, swallow, or use on your skin undiluted!
What are the reported benefits of mineral salts? People report a cleansing, relaxing, and even healing benefit. It is also said to relieve stress, swelling, and pain. Finally, it is an excellent skin detoxifier. (Many people do not realize that your skin is the largest organ of the body and plays a large role in detoxification.) Sea salt is excellent as it retains vital trace minerals. Regular table salt has most minerals removed, therefore rendering the least benefit of them all. Some even use Dead Sea salt, which is purported to have a lot of trace minerals. Epsom salt is primarily made of magnesium and sulfates, instead of sodium chloride (regular table salt). Epsom salt is said to soften and exfoliate the skin. It reduces inflammation, thereby reducing pain. An interesting side note about Epsom salt is that it is known for its benefits in the bath, but few people know that it is also an excellent fertilizer for many garden plants.
