Valentine’s Day in the Upper Midwest is proof positive that we’re cut from thick cloth—with spring’s ability to turn fancy into thoughts of love well in the future, we find ourselves called on to summon a romantic mood in a month that reminds one of nothing so much as a hangover. Didn’t we just breathe a sigh of relief that the holidays were past us? Yet here we are again.
At the Willy Street Co-op’s Production Kitchen, we stopped for breath after the Thanksgiving (and after) pie push, then picked up where we left off in getting some new products out there for you to taste and share with the person (or people) who set you aflutter in this last of the freezin’ season. We shot for rich; we shot for bacon; we shot for chocolate. Here’s a rundown of the things you’ll see showing up in February in the Bakery and Deli as regular items—in addition, we’ll be capitalizing on the confectionery expertise and initiative of our own Bakery Supervisor Lucy Hodgman to bring some special Valentine’s Day items your way. Blueberry-Cream Cheese Cutie Pies
Every year, at least once, we talk about tryingto get a berry pie on the shelf. We don’t want to lower our product standard, but usually find that a full-sized pie filled with organic berries results in a little thing called “sticker shock.” So, we brought back the portion size to result in something we felt good about both product and price-wise. Look for these on special in the first half of the month!
Our savory cheese scone is a personal favorite, and we’ve long wanted to get more savory bakery out onto the shelves. This is our first expansion in that direction and will contain a rich blend of Beeler’s Iowa bacon, Wisconsin Swiss Cheese and black pepper. A breakfast sandwich without the mess.
Mocha Mint Cake Slices
A new flavor, in a new form, at a lower price than our current cake offerings, said simply. You can’t go too far astray with chocolate, can you? Find this close to our newly located grab-n-go sandwich and salad offerings and make a meal of it. And, on the kitchen side…
Whiskey Marinated Tofu
Setting the stage for St. Pat’s we soaked tofu in Powers Whiskey, Andersen’s Maple Syrup and a blend of spices and roasted it to bring a crisp, sweet and savory soy selection to the shelf to add to our usual tofu favorites. Also look for Dijon-Basil and Barbeque Grilled Tofu, coming in February as well.
Mushroom & Cheddar-Broccoli Pot Pies
Close cousin to our popular savory pockets, these easily make a meal for two if paired with a green salad, or a meal for one if you’ve been shoveling all morning…or not. Sometimes, no excuse is needed for reveling in comfort food while winter winds down.
