The two farms featured on this year’s Farm Tour were each chosen for their unique qualities and products. Both farms garnered warm praise from Co-op Owners who joined us for the day-long adventure.
Four Elements Herbals
Our first stop was at Jane Hawley Stevens’ and Dave Stevens’ organic farm in North Freedom. Jane and Dave welcomed our group and described the history of their farm and company, Four Elements Herbals. Jane and her small crew produce tinctures, salves, creams, soaps and more in the factory on the farm, which was of particular interest to tourists. Other parts of the tour included the still-lush early October gardens and a wagon ride with Dave through the prairie restoration area and forest amid the Baraboo Bluffs.
Cates Family Farm
Afterdining on lunch catered by the Willy Street Co-op Kitchen, we headed over to Spring Green and the Cates Family Farm where Angus and Jersey (yes, Jersey) cattle graze on 90 acres 365 days a year. Dick and Kim met us at the gate to the farm and offered a wagon-ride tour and overview of their farm and farming philosophies. Dick was a most gracious host who patiently answered many questions about the cattle and grazing methods.
We would like to thank our hosts for their warm and welcome receptions, as well as the tour participants who came together for a memorable day of sharing and learning.
