In Season: Your Locally Grown Guide

The local season has been under way for a few months now. This year, as we were winding down the ’08 season on Tipi carrots and Igl potatoes, we started seeing the first of the ‘09 crops. Jen Ehr started the season with sorrel in mid-April, and before we knew it, we were rolling in morels, asparagus, and ramps. Each year our local farmers seem to be able to make the seasons overlap. Don’s tomatoes started arriving in April. Harmony Valley over-winters parsnips, sunchokes, and burdock. Troy Community Farm and Garden to Be supply us with fresh sprouts and micro greens year-round, and Gourmet Delight keeps us in the local mushroom business all year. You can always find something locally grown in the Produce department, and your continued support enables the farmers to provide this service. This year as we approach peak season, over 20 local farms will be supplying the department with their high-quality produce.

We’ve also been working with Rink DaVee, from Dancing Star Farm, in an effort to bring some of Michigan’s finest stone fruit and berries to the Co-op. Rink is sourcing peaches, plums, apricots, cherries, and blueberries from certified organic farms and growers who practice sustainable methods in their orchards. We’re really excited about this, and can’t wait to try these regional treats!

Here is a guide to the local products we’ll be offering through the summer and fall, and when you should be able to find them at the Co-op. Look for the purple inserts in our product signs to identify locally grown items, and watch for local products on special!
