Sadly, we must inform you that the beautiful silver maple on the Jenifer Street side our property near the sculpture in our Rain Garden, has been deemed structurally unsound and beyond cure.
In addition to 2 other independent consultations from local arborists, we also asked R. Bruce Allison, Ph.D of Allison Tree Care, Inc. to examine the tree and make a diagnosis. After conducting several tests, including a sonic tomogram (sonic waves sent through various areas of the trunk to determine density, not unlike an MRI) the tree’s internal condition showed evidence of numerous cavities, decay and poor wound closures. Ultimately, Dr. Allison, a nationally renowned expert, who we’d hoped would help us save the tree, agreed with the first two arborists and advised us to remove it to prevent an unsafe situation.
At this time, we are securing a service to take down the tree by the middle of October and regret any inconvenience this may cause you. We will do everything we can to minimize the impact of this activity, but wanted to alert you to our plans. We will contact you again when we know the exact date of the removal.
In response to the loss of this historic tree, we will re-plant a healthy, tree around Arbor Day in the Rain Garden. Additionally, we plan to donate another tree to Orton Park, to begin replacing the many trees lost there and throughout our neighborhood in recent years.
