Ever wonder what the Wellness team reaches for when we feel a cold or the flu coming on? Well, here’s your chance to find out!
When I feel like I’m getting sick, I start taking two New Chapter Immune Take Care elderberry lozenges. They are pricey, but I really think they work. I also start drinking more fluids by adding green tea and herbal tea blends to my day as well as fresh juice from the Juice Bar in addition to water. If I do get sick, I try to get extra rest. I use Olbas pastilles for sore throat and stuffiness. They are strong and help open up my respiratory passages. I also sometimes like the B&T regular cough syrups to help me get through my days or their nighttime variety to help me sleep.
My go-to formula when I first get sick is astragalus. I like it best in liquid form. The one ounce bottle fits in my purse nicely. I find it helpful to keep them with me so I can easily take the herb the moment I feel sick. The sooner you treat the cold/flu the better chance that it will be kept at bay. The bulk Simpler’s tinctures are a good quality product and very affordable. They are $5.99 for a one-ounce bottle.
My favorite remedy for that nasty cold is sleep. A good 12 hours a day will do. If I can’t get to sleep, I take melatonin. Apparently, less is more with this supplement, so I take the 1 mg dosage. I also take as many immunity boosting supplements as I can get my hands on. Right now my favorites are the Quantum Health Elderberry Liquid Extract, the Willy Street Co-op Wellness Booster, and Immune Defense Emergen-C Ruby Lemon Honey. Vitamin D is also a daily supplement for me and is crucial for immune system strength... Oh, and did I mention sleep?
First thing I’d grab for a stuffy nose is my neti pot. Then I’d take an essential oil such as Eucalyptus, mix it 50-50 with a carrier oil and rub it on my feet, the padded part under the toes, which correlates with the sinuses. I’d also take some of the Eucalyptus oil, about 20 drops, and put it in a 2oz. spray bottle with water and spray the air around me. I find the herbs echinacea and goldenseal helpful. And if I happen to have a bottle of Wellness Formula by Source Naturals, (which has echinacea and goldenseal in it, plus a whole lot more), I’ll take those for a few days at the first sign of imbalance. This remedy has “nipped it in the bud” for me in the past. Also, I would eat and drink more fresh fruits and veggies, preferably in the form of homemade fresh juice as this will help get the body back to its healthy alkaline state.
I love taking a juiced ginger shot from the Juice Bar, even though I hate ginger in general (well in my food anyways). That and a good dose of echinacea. Other than that sleep and eating as much greens as I can.
Whether it really helps me or not, I love a good hot toddy when I’m stuffed in the head. I like to heat up some Knudsen’s Lemon Ginger Echinacea or our Juice Bar’s Hot Toddy Concentrate and add a splash of bourbon. If nothing else, I sleep well. If I notice (and actually do something when I start to feel) a cold coming on, I try to head it off with Sumbocol and up my doses of my Floradix, but often I just surrender and sleep as much as I can.
Astragalus is one of my favorite herbs for immune system (and overall health) enhancement. I start taking the tincture at the beginning of fall on a daily basis, and I definitely feel fortified by it.
In their book Adaptogens, herbalists David Winston and Stephen Maimes note that, “Astragalus enhances immune system function and helps prevent colds, influenza, bronchitis, mononucleosis, (and) pneumonia.” Astragalus is a very safe herb, but one should still consult their health care professional before taking any herb. Also, traditional Chinese medicine advises against taking this herb when one has a fever or acute infection; it is best used as an immune builder. I also take the Host Defense Stamets 7 medicinal mushroom blend to keep colds and flu at bay in the fall and winter. If I do start to feel run down, or the beginnings of a cold, I immediately start taking elderberry in either tincture or the New Chapter Immunity Take Care lozenges. Of course, a hot cup of tea and a good night’s sleep works wonders too!
I consider healthy digestion to be one of the most important aspects to keeping the body in balance and able to fight off infection. Besides eating healthy whole foods, taking probiotics and digestive enzymes can help keep the digestive system working efficiently. I also incorporate miso and fermented vegetables into my diet and try to eat as many raw fruits and vegetables as possible. I am a big fan of astragulas and ginger too. I drink a cup of Rishi ginger tea with astragulas tincture added every morning from fall to spring. If I start to feel like I’m getting sick, I take New Chapter Immunity Take Care at the very first signs. Other than that, I just try to drink plenty of water and get as much rest as possible.
