Willy Street Co-op's Eat Local Challenge - How Local Will You Go?

  • Eat Local Challenge
  • local
  • local farmers

Eat Local Challenge logoHow do I start? Take the pledge!

Please join us for Willy Street Co-op’s Eat Local Challenge, Aug. 15th–Sept 15th!

What is the Eat Local Challenge?
We’re challenging YOU to eat more local foods, whether they’re from farmers’ markets, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), your garden or our store.

Sign up for any of the levels and we’ll give you coupons, recipes, a food diary and other resources to help.

Why eat local?
Local foods tend to be fresher than those shipped from across the country or farther away, and fresh food has more nutrients. Transporting food long distances requires more fossil fuels and packaging than those grown and prepared closer to home. You’re also supporting your local farmers and keeping the agricultural viability of their communities alive.

Not quite ready for the Challenge?
See the recipes online, buy some local products. Try it for a week, a day or even a meal. You’ll see how easy – and delicious – it is to eat local.

What's New?

LOCAL ECONOMICS AND THE CO-OP

I was standing in the Produce Department the other day, admiring the start of the season’s local bounty when a customer flagged me over for some assistance. “What’s the deal with all of these ‘lo-cal’ signs on everything? Why is it so important that produce be low in calories?”

“Oh that’s not ‘lo-cal,’ as in low calorie,” I said, “it means ‘local,’ as in it was grown, or produced nearby.” Looking satisfied, the customer selected some delicious looking vegetables and moved on to the local, but decidedly not ‘lo-cal’ pastries near the Juice Bar. I, meanwhile, was left standing in front of the sign wondering what local really means for the products in our store, for our business practices in the community, for the people like me who work here, and for the shoppers who support the unique focus on local sourcing of the products we use and enjoy each day.

Buzzworthy Insect Repellents

July is the time to be outside in Wisconsin. Weekends are filled with camping, relaxing “up north,” shopping at farmers’ markets, grilling out, spending time on the lakes, going to neighborhood parties and enjoying live music. The one thing that bugs me is, well, the BUGS!

Here’s the gross part: mosquitoes, ticks, black flies, deer flies, and horse flies require animal or human blood as food. Any other bite or sting is a defensive or protective reaction by the insect.

MOSQUITOES AND TICKS
There are more than 50 mosquito species living in Wisconsin. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, although some species are “day biters.” Usually, the wound of a mosquito bite is minor. The itching and swelling are allergic responses to the mosquito’s salivary secretions, which vary in intensity depending on the individual. In many regions of the world, mosquitoes may transmit very serious diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. However, the only mosquito-borne diseases seen in Wisconsin are LaCrosse Encephalitis (one case in Wisconsin in 2009), West Nile Virus (one case in Wisconsin in 2009), and heartworm in dogs.

Are You Up for the Eat Local Challenge?

Locavore: One who eats only locally grown foods.

Are you a locavore?    Would you like to be, or are you simply interested in adding a few more local foods to your repertoire? You’ll have the opportunity late this summer when Willy Street Co-op holds our first annual Eat Local Challenge. As an eater who has taken a similar challenge, I can tell you from personal experience that you won’t regret it.

The reasons for eating a more local diet are many and varied. Local food takes less energy to get from field to table; buying it supports small farmers and our local economy; it’s fresher and healthier; it’s usually tastier; and it roots us to our place unlike anything else can. If we are what we eat, and if what we eat comes from where we are, then we are undeniably a part of the place where we live. Deep, huh?

Willy West Welcome Ribbon Cutting

  • Willy West

Willy West Welcome draws 300 people and raises over $1300 for Plant-a-Row-for-the-Hungry program.

Despite the threat of rain and the windy conditions, our "Willy West Welcome" event at the site what will be the second store was a great success. Saturday, April 3rd from 11:30am-2:30pm we met with future neighbors, held a ribbon-cutting after a few words from Middleton Mayor Kurt Sonnentag, offered information about the project and the Owner Bonds, and sold brat lunches. Proceeds of the lunch fundraiser (totaling $1319!) benefited the Bock Community Garden's Plant-a-Row-for-the-Hungry program.

We have signed a lease on 6825 University Avenue in Middleton!

  • Willy West

We’ve taken another giant step toward the opening of a second store. Our Board of Directors President George Hofheimer and General Manager Anya Firszt signed a 15-year lease for 6825 University Avenue in Middleton at the March 26th special Board meeting.

George said that "The Board received such overwhelming support and encouragement from current Willy Street Co-op owners, prospective owners and community members to pursue this project. We are ready, willing and extremely excited to bring local and organic food options to another neighborhood in Dane County."

The next step for the Co-op involves a Bond Drive. Already Owners have pledged to buy the Bonds that will help finance the project. The goal is to sell at least $600,000 worth of Bonds by May 26th, 60 days after the lease-signing. (When the Co-op moved to its current location at 1221 Williamson St. in 1999, we sold $443,000 in Bonds to help finance that project.) When we've sold $600,000 worth of Bonds, we will have cleared the last major hurdle on the way to opening the store.

BPA monitoring update

In a welcome move, the FDA has committed to re-examining the potential dangers associated with as substance called Bisphynol A or BPA, which is contained in the plastic (#7) used in the lining of some food cans.

The Willy Street Grocery Cooperative has been monitoring and providing information about BPA in some vendors' canned foods and we are encouraging those vendors to to refrain from using BPA products. Until an alternative is introduced, we have continued to seek out new producers who refrain from using BPA in their packaging.

The recent update to our ongoing monitoring of BPA use by our vendors can be found here.
