2010 Madison's Favorites results

Madison's Favorite LogoThe results are in for this year's Madison's Favorites. Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll. Because of your participation your Willy Street Co-op took first in the following categories.

  • Deli Counter
  • Natural Food Store
  • Grocery Store

We are always striving to be the best cooperative neighborhood grocery store we can be and having results like these lets us know we are on the right track. With our Middleton store (schedule to open Nov. 1st), we will continue to provide our shoppers with the same service and high quality products.

Thanks again,
The Willy Street Co-op staff

Update About Project to Install Driveway onto Jenifer St.

Aug. 19, 2010

Dear Willy Street Co-op Owners,

As you may have heard, we intend to install a driveway onto Jenifer Street later this fall. We have received a lot of support for this as well as some questions and some opposition.

The main reasons for the driveway are to ease congestion in and around our lot; to improve safety on Williamson St.; and to provide a way into the Co-op parking lot for customers and delivery trucks during Williamson St. road construction (currently scheduled for 2011).

We sent 260 letters to neighbors to inform them of the larger project to improve the parking lot and the Jenifer St. side of our property. We invited them to the neighborhood meeting on Aug. 16th and presented the plans. (The plans will be available on our website on the week of Aug. 23rd.) We received a lot of feedback and questions at this meeting, which we appreciate - that was a major reason for holding it. Meeting minutes will be posted by Aug. 31st.

The meeting has spurred a few initiatives:

Madison office takes the Eat Local Challenge

  • Eat Local Challenge

The people who work at Avid, a worldwide company with a Madison office, are encouraging their employees to be more environmentally friendly and become more aware of sustainable practices. When Jenn Czecholinski, the Madison office manager, found out about the Eat Local Challenge, she encouraged her co-workers to sign up.

Since then, they've had zucchini muffiins brought in and ordered pizza from Roman Candle (which uses some local ingredients).

Please send us your photos and tell us what you're doing to eat local!

Expanding Your Knowledge of Home Fermentation

It is the first of September, and Willy Street Co-op’s first ever Eat Local Challenge is well underway. Some of you have dived in and made the commitment, while others of you, clad in your swimsuits, are standing at the shore, dipping one toe in the waters of converting to a more local diet. But regardless of your level of involvement, the fact remains that you are an Owner of Willy Street Co-op, and you’ve made your voices heard through your purchases, your comments, and your participation in our DIY classes: you want to support local farmers and producers! You’ve been educated about the benefits of a local diet, you know to scan our aisles for purple tags, and you are willing to give it a try. How did we get so lucky to have people like you as our Owners?

In a previous article (www.willystreet.coop/article/3914), I exposed you to an introduction to home fermentation with instructions on how to make homemade sauerkraut. Here we will expand on that concept by experimenting with fermenting other vegetables (kimchi) and tea (kombucha.)

P6 FARM TOUR 2010

October is National Co-op Month and as if that weren’t exciting enough, this year we’re pleased to announce the launch of the Cooperative Trade Movement’s P6 Initiative as well. What is that, you ask? We’ll be printing an article to fully describe this new initiative in the October issue of the Reader, but we wanted to give you a preview of this revolution to strengthen the channels of cooperative and local trade in the United States. Local farmers and vendors, consumers and other Co-ops will benefit from this movement that borrows its name from the International Cooperative’s Principle 6, which binds us all to a commitment of Cooperation among Cooperatives.

Abbreviated, the symbol “P6” was chosen as a label to guide consumers toward sustainable food-buying choices. The three farms included in this year’s Farm Tour all qualify as P6 vendors because they provide family-farmed, local foods to our store. In response to feedback from previous tours, this year’s tour will feature less travel time and more touring time of these family farms in nearby western Dane County.

Only 65 days until our projected opening date

Submitted by Phil Ward on Wed, 08/25/2010 - 1:27pm

With only 65 days until our projected opening date, here is an update on the progress of Willy West. All the subcontractors have either had plans approved or will by the end of this week. The HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) subcontractor, Commercial Air, has started work. We are very pleased to have Commercial Air as the HVAC sub as they have done HVAC and refrigeration work for the Coop for over 15 years. Anya told me that back in the day it was Commercial Air that taught her how to add Freon to the refrigeration lines.

Construction continues on installation of the steel supports on the roof for the refrigeration and condenser units, exterior framing (we selected a really nice redwood, like the color for the façade, that will pull the red highlights out of the Nichiha Stone facing), constructing loading dock walls, and interior layout. Framing will be starting next week.

Willy Street Co-op's Eat Local Challenge - How Local Will You Go?

  • Eat Local Challenge
  • local
  • local farmers

Eat Local Challenge logoThe Eat Local Challenge has begun! (It runs Aug. 15th–Sept. 15th.)

Even if you haven't signed up for it, you can still check out the resources farther down the page for ideas and help in finding local products. You can also join the Eat Local Challenge Facebook group to share locations for hard-to-find local foods, photos and recipes.

What is the Eat Local Challenge?
We’re challenging YOU to eat more local foods, whether they’re from farmers’ markets, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), your garden or our store. The Challenge runs Aug. 15th–Sept. 15th.

Why eat local?
Local foods tend to be fresher than those shipped from across the country or farther away, and fresh food has more nutrients. Transporting food long distances requires more fossil fuels and packaging than those grown and prepared closer to home. You’re also supporting your local farmers and keeping the agricultural viability of their communities alive.

Not quite ready for the Challenge?
See the recipes online, buy some local products. Try it for a week, a day or even a meal. You’ll see how easy – and delicious – it is to eat local.
