How We Define "Local"

Lots of stores talk about shopping local. What does that really mean? The definition varies depending on where you shop; there is no set definition for local in the grocery sector. At our Co-op, local means the product was sourced from anywhere in Wisconsin or from within 150 miles of the state capitol building (see map below).

We also track whether a product is 100% Local, Essentially Local, or Locally Prepared:

100% locally grown tag

We consider a product 100% Local if the product has multiple ingredients, all of them are local and the product is baked, cooked, mixed, etc. locally.

Essentially Local tag

We consider a product Essentially Local if at least 50% of the ingredients are grown or raised in the state of Wisconsin, or within 150 miles of the Capitol building in Madison.

locally prepared tag

We consider products to be Locally Prepared if they're made locally—and they may be made with some local ingredients—but do not meet the criteria we use for our "Essentially Local" designation.

We're in the process of consolidating our local designation on our price tags to simply indicate whether or not a product is "local." We will be adding a list of products on our website so that you can check whether a particular product is 100% Local, Essentially Local, or Locally Prepared; please check back!
