Willy East is open again after multiple refrigeration and freezer cases have been replaced. We took some photos as the shelves were being stocked on Friday to compare them with the areas beforehand. The new coolers/freezers are much more energy-efficient! Thank you to Co-op Owners and customers for your patience as we completed this much-needed work.
Sustainability statistics on our new refrigerant, coolers & freezers:
- GWP (“Global Warming Potential” – a measure of how much a greenhouse gas contributes to climate change relative to carbon dioxide (CO2) over a specific period) as low as 1282, a 67% reduction compared to R-507 (our original refrigerant type at Willy East).
- The new refrigerant (R-449a) is 8 to 12% more energy efficiency than R-507.
- The new refrigerant also runs at a lower pressure which makes it so the refrigeration compressors & condenser don’t have to work as hard.
- It is also safe and nonflammable with an ASHRAE A1 safety classification (ASHRAE A1 is part of a system of thermal guidelines created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for data processing environments).
- The new coolers and freezers are better insulated, use LEDs, and use new efficient fans.
