We stand with our community in mourning the loss of Corey Ruiz, a Black man who was killed by a Madison Police Officer at Baldwin and Williamson Streets.
We recognize that his death carries profound pain for his family, friends, witnesses, and for members of our community. It also comes within a long and painful history of Black people losing their lives in encounters with law enforcement—a history that has created understandable grief, anger, and distrust here in Madison and across the country.
For over 50 years, this neighborhood has been our home. This tragedy occurred in a place that is at the heart of our story. This should be a safe place for everyone.
As a democratically controlled organization, we believe that every person’s voice must be heard, especially when it is raised against injustice.
Willy Street Co-op has provided security footage to the City of Madison Office of the Independent Police Monitor and the Madison Police Department in support of complete and independent investigations. We are listening to our employees, Owners, neighbors, and community partners about how the Co-op can support peaceful community expression. We know that words alone are not enough. We are committed to following them with care, transparency, and meaningful action.
