Vegetarian Furikake Rice Seasoning

Furikake is the salt & pepper of Japan, often sprinkled on rice to make it more flavorful. It's a crunchy, salty seasoning that typically contains bonito flakes or salmon bits, as well as MSG. This home-made version is simple to make. Try it on rice, as they do in Japan, or on popcorn for a yummy treat!

  • 2 nori sheets
  • 1/4 c sesame seeds
  • 1/2 t coarse sea salt
  • 1/2 t sugar

Vegetarian Furikake Rice Seasoning Directions

  1. Gently toast each nori sheet by holding them with tongs over a low flame. They burn quickly, so be careful. Use kitchen shears to snip the sheets into small pieces.
  2. Combine half of the sesame seeds, the salt, and the sugar, and grind with a mortar and pestle. Transfer to a small mixing bowl. Stir in the remaining sesame seeds and the nori. Store in an airtight container.
